Etsy SEO Audit: The 27-Point Checklist Sellers Should Run Every Quarter (2026)

A practical 27-point Etsy SEO audit checklist covering shop setup, listing titles and tags, photos, pricing and conversion — with a scoring method to decide what to fix first.

Etsy shops rarely fail for mysterious reasons. When we audit a shop that has stalled, the causes are almost always the same handful: tags nobody searches for, a first photo that loses the thumbnail contest, a price that ignores Etsy’s fees, and a listing page that gives a hesitant buyer no reason to trust the seller. None of these needs an agency to find. They need a checklist and an honest hour.

This is the checklist we run internally before every paid audit. It has 27 points across five areas. Score each one green (fine), amber (needs work) or red (broken), then fix the reds in the order described at the end. If you want the measured version — real search volumes for every tag, competitor benchmarks and rewritten listings — that is what the Specifek Etsy Audit does.

Before you start: pull four numbers from Etsy Stats

Open Shop Manager → Stats, set the range to the last 90 days and note these figures. They tell you where the problem lives before you touch anything.

  • Visits — if visits are low, the problem is discovery (sections A and B).
  • Conversion rate — Etsy-wide averages sit around 1–3%. If you get visits but sit below 1%, the problem is the listing page itself (sections C, D and E).
  • Share of visits from Etsy search — under 30% usually means your tags and titles are not doing their job.
  • Revenue per visit — visits × conversion × average order value in one number; use it to judge whether an audit worked.

A. Shop-level checks (7 points)

  1. Shop title carries a keyword. The 55-character shop title is indexed by Google and shown in search snippets. “Handmade Ceramic Mugs & Planters, Kent” beats “Welcome to my shop”.
  2. Banner and icon are legible at phone size. Most Etsy traffic is mobile. If the banner text cannot be read on a 6-inch screen, it is decoration, not communication.
  3. Announcement is current. A “Christmas orders close 18 December” line in March signals an abandoned shop to both buyers and Etsy’s quality signals.
  4. About section tells a story with faces. Shops with a completed About section, photos of the maker and a short origin story convert better because they answer the unspoken question: is this real?
  5. Policies, FAQ and processing times are filled in and realistic. Empty FAQ and vague processing times are conversion leaks and, for some categories, a Star Seller blocker.
  6. Sections are named like search terms. “Personalised Wedding Gifts” is a section name that ranks; “Collection 3” is not.
  7. Reviews are answered, especially the bad ones. A calm, specific reply to a 3-star review is read by every future buyer who scrolls to it.

B. Listing SEO (8 points)

This is where most of the lost traffic hides. Audit your five best-selling and five worst-performing listings first; patterns will repeat across the rest of the shop.

  1. Titles front-load the buyer’s phrase. Etsy weighs the first words of the 140-character title most heavily, and the mobile app truncates after roughly 50 characters. Lead with the exact phrase a buyer would type, then add one or two natural variants. Do not repeat the same word three times.
  2. All 13 tags are used, and every tag is multi-word. Each tag can hold 20 characters. “Gift” wastes a slot; “gift for new dad” competes for a real query.
  3. Tags mirror the title, then extend it. Etsy ranks a listing higher for a phrase that appears in both title and tags. Use six or seven slots to mirror title phrases and the rest for synonyms, occasions, recipients, materials and styles.
  4. Every attribute and category field is filled. Colour, material, occasion, holiday and recipient attributes act as hidden tags and power the filters in Etsy search. Blank attributes are free rankings left on the table.
  5. The first 160 characters of the description sell and describe. Etsy uses the opening of the description as the Google meta description, and Etsy’s own search now indexes description text. Open with what it is, who it is for and what makes it different — not with “Welcome!”.
  6. Keywords have measured demand. Check each phrase in a tool such as eRank or Marmalead, or at minimum in Etsy’s search bar autocomplete. A tag with beautiful wording and zero searches is a dead slot.
  7. No tag has zero impressions after 60 days. Etsy Stats → listing → Search terms shows which phrases actually brought visits. Tags that never appear are replaced, not kept for sentiment.
  8. You are not relying on renewals. Renewing a listing gives at most a brief, small boost and costs $0.20 each time. If renewals are your SEO strategy, points 8–14 are where the money went.

Measure, do not guess

The single biggest difference between a self-audit and a professional one is data. Before rewriting a tag, know its monthly searches and how many listings compete for it. Guessed tags are why shops rank for phrases nobody types.

Tags are where most shops lose points in this section. For the full method (how many to use, which ones rank and how to fill all 13 slots) see our Etsy tags guide.

C. Photos and video (4 points)

  1. All 10 photo slots are used. Etsy’s own guidance and every conversion study point the same way: more angles, fewer doubts, fewer returns.
  2. The first photo wins the thumbnail contest. Search results show it at roughly 570 × 456 pixels, cropped to 5:4, next to 47 competitors. Test it at that size: is the product clear, filling the frame, on a clean or lifestyle background that matches your category’s top sellers?
  3. The set covers scale, lifestyle, detail and packaging. One photo with a hand or a common object for size, one in use, one close-up of texture or finish, one of how it arrives. Missing scale shots are the top cause of “smaller than expected” reviews.
  4. A 5–15 second video exists. Video autoplays in search on the app and lifts click-through. Show the item turning, being used or being unboxed; no sound needed.

D. Pricing and offers (4 points)

  1. Prices are built from cost plus fees, not copied from competitors. A UK sale loses about 12–15% to Etsy fees before VAT, close to 30% when it comes through Offsite Ads. Run every core listing through the Etsy fee calculator and confirm the margin survives the worst case.
  2. Shipping strategy is deliberate. Free shipping on US orders over $35 earns a search boost in the US market; elsewhere, compare the conversion lift against the fee you pay on shipping. Either way, the label cost is inside the price, not absorbed silently.
  3. Automated offers are switched on. Abandoned-cart and favourited-item coupons at 10–15% recover buyers who were already convinced. Thank-you coupons drive the second order, which is where Etsy margins finally look healthy.
  4. Variations are priced individually. A large size at the same price as a small one either overcharges the buyer or undercharges you. Use per-variation pricing and let the listing show the “from” price.

E. Conversion and trust (4 points)

  1. Processing time and shipping profiles are honest and short. Estimated delivery dates appear in search results. A listing that promises 1–3 days and ships in 7 collects late-shipment flags; one that promises 3 weeks loses the click.
  2. Personalisation fields are precise. If you offer personalisation, the instruction box tells the buyer exactly what to type, with an example and a character limit. Vague boxes create wrong orders and 1-star reviews.
  3. Returns and FAQ answer the hesitation. “What if it does not fit?”, “Can I change the colour?”, “Is it safe for a dishwasher?” — the answers belong in the FAQ, not in a message thread three days later.
  4. The review profile matches the promise. Read your last 20 reviews. Recurring words — “smaller”, “late”, “colour” — are your next audit item, whatever the star rating says.

How to score and prioritise

Give every point a colour: green, amber or red. Then rank the reds and ambers with a simple ICE score — Impact (1–5), Confidence that the fix will work (1–5) and Ease (1–5), multiplied. A red on point 14 (tags with zero impressions) usually scores 5 × 5 × 4 = 100 and goes first. A red on the banner scores 2 × 4 × 5 = 40 and waits.

  • First week: dead tags, first photos and fee-blind prices on your top ten listings.
  • Second week: attributes, description openings and shipping profiles across the whole shop.
  • Third week: About section, FAQ, review replies, video.
  • Then: wait 30 days, re-pull the four Stats numbers, and repeat the audit on the next ten listings.

What we see most often

Across the shops we audit, the same findings recur regardless of category: half the tag slots empty or single-word, first photos that read as a grey blur at thumbnail size, description openings that greet the buyer instead of describing the product, prices set before Etsy’s 2026 fee changes and never revisited, and processing times set to “1–3 days” out of optimism rather than capacity. Each one is fixable in an afternoon. Together they explain most of the gap between a shop that gets views and a shop that gets orders.

When to bring in a professional audit

If you have run this checklist, fixed the reds and your search visits still have not moved in 60 days, the problem is usually keyword selection or competitive positioning — the two things a self-audit cannot measure. A Specifek Etsy Audit measures every tag against real demand and competition, benchmarks your listings against the shops that rank, and hands back copy-paste-ready titles, tags and descriptions. Packages start at £29.

Start with the checklist. When it stops moving the numbers, see how the audit packages compare, or price your next listing properly with the free fee calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I audit my Etsy shop?

Run the full 27-point audit once a quarter and a short version (tags, first photo, price) whenever a listing goes 60 days without a sale. Etsy changes fees and ranking signals several times a year, so an annual review is not enough.

Does renewing listings improve Etsy SEO?

Renewing gives at most a brief, small freshness boost and costs $0.20 per listing each time. It is not a strategy. Fixing tags with zero impressions and improving the first photo produces a larger and lasting effect.

How many tags should an Etsy listing have?

All 13. Each tag can be up to 20 characters, so use multi-word phrases buyers actually type (“personalised dog collar”) rather than single words (“dog”). Mirror your title’s key phrases in the tags and use the remaining slots for synonyms, occasions and materials.

How long until SEO changes show in Etsy search?

Etsy re-indexes edited listings within hours, but ranking depends on the listing’s click and conversion history. Expect two to four weeks before Etsy Stats shows a reliable change in search visits for an edited listing.

What does a professional Etsy audit include that a self-audit does not?

Measured search volume and competition for every tag, a side-by-side benchmark of your listings against the shops that actually rank, a root-cause read of your sales timeline, and copy-paste-ready titles, tags and descriptions. Specifek’s Etsy Audit packages start at £29 for one listing.
